Autumn school tour & pumpkin harvest

Just in time for Halloween, the students of my children’s school visited our garden to harvest their pumpkins.  On their first trip to us back in April they sowed the seeds in pots and returned in June to plant them out in the earth.

Aside from collecting their pumpkins, they also got to help unearth some of the potatoes they sowed on their first visit.

In the house, we enjoyed some pumpkin pancakes with blackberry sauce and warm Maine maple syrup, and then we demonstrated a bit of seed saving.

Here are some pictures from their visit.

We’ve loved having them explore outside the classroom with us.  The enthusiasm and appreciation from the students and teachers matched ours and we hope maybe this will be an annual ‘sow, plant, harvest & prepare’ trio of trips to our garden.

How wonderful to see the kids enjoying your garden. You have given them a brilliant and memorable experience. Still jealous that you managed to grow pumpkins this year and we didn’t!

  2. How wonderful! So great that living on an island and having a smaller school allows for a visit to a local farm……I bet your own kids were mighty proud of their homestead and their mama and papa who together carve out this very good life. Oh, to have a day away from their desks, plunge their hands in soil, reap their harvest……and have a fancy pancake lunch! Excellent!

    • If there were such thing as a perfect day, this would probably have been it. We’re so grateful for all the grand blessings on our little island, the small schools being one of those that mean the most to us. And sharing food with others is one of our favourite things to do.

What a wonderful field trip! I love the fact that they planted the pumpkins in the spring and got to harvest them in the fall and then carve them for Halloween ……. plus you fed them pumpkin pancakes. How awesome is that?

    • Thanks Elizabeth. I’m intrigued and know there are many Irish quotes I would like to research and share but not sure when I would get to it. Thanks for the invite but have to be honest and say I can’t promise I will follow through. Eeks, sorry!

  4. How wonderful to share your beautiful garden with your kids and schoolmates! It must have given you a great sense of pride. We are in the fall season here….well almost all the leaves have fallen down but is is still beautiful. Enjoy your weekend.
