I returned from my r & r holiday last evening feeling another r & r, refreshed and ready to go.  With unbelievable amounts of time spent sleeping, I also managed a couple sea swims, pool swims, spa time, late night chats, and a meeting or three over tea and/or food with girlfriends.  Feeling completely rejuvenated I am!

Today was a happy busy first day back home for me– happy to be busy doing some of my favourite things that support our desires to be creatively self-sustaining.

Instead of devoting an entire post to individual projects I’m going to summarize the latest going-ons here with a few pics.

We went clamming today at noon as there was a super low tide.  Johnny gathered razor clams while I got more mosaic treasure…can picture the mosaic in my mind’s eye now.  Afterwards, we both foraged for mussels.  We just finished a delicious dinner of our catch of the day sauteed with wild garlic leaves, mushrooms, and onions.

Before leaving on my trip, I had a sewing class for one of my daughters and two other young island girls to make Irish dancing skirts for a feis this coming weekend.  Running short on time during the class, I finished pressing the pleats of one of the skirts today before delivering it back to the little seamstress.  I’ll get a picture of the three wearing their entire outfits this weekend. I’m feeling very proud of the girls and am sure they’ll have much fun and success wearing them.

While I was away, Johnny surprised me by starting making our much needed larger window boxes as well as placing the tiles over the Stanley range heater in our dining room.  The children helped with the tiling.


Five new baby goats have arrived in the last week.  I posted the first few to be born on my fb page on Mother’s Day (in March here).  These two are the newest set of twins who arrived a couple days ago.  Such cutie-cutesters and as cuddly to us as we want to be with them…like all animals, goats have their own personalities and aren’t always that fond of people’s attention and affection.IMG_20160309_184830

    • Yes! Tis good to be home and nearly fell into old patterns, but will def be taking a couple days off work next week, and that is that! 😉

      About to go out and check on the progress of bulbs planted last autumn, see what is springing about here!! Still chasing my tail for my ‘solid’ inspiration though have one idea. Will catch up with you and all over the rest of weekend. Hugs!!

    You are so lucky to be so close to the sea. I remember picking mussels off the rocks on the sea shore in Prince Edward Island as a child. Razor clams are so delicious, how do you cook yours? Cheers, Michele

    • Living by the sea is a true blessing, I don’t take it for granted even though it’s been my entire life. PEI is a beautiful place, lovely childhood memories. As regards to razor clams….for freezing, we pour hot water on them in their shells so as to release them and then plunge into cold water– this keeps them from cooking through– then dry and pack for freezer. Sometimes we steam them, but usually do the same as above (to avoid over cooking) then add them into stir-fry last minute or in garlic butter for a minute or two, sometimes we chop them bitesize, sometimes we leave whole. They over cook so easily we find, and prefer them not too rubbery. I have a couple of times deep fried in batter trying to recreate childhood memories of New England clam shacks I grew up near, but it’s a lot of effort and quite unhealthy, no regrets though!!

        I like mine Chinese style stir fried with black bean sauce, garlic and chilies. Thanks for the lovely letter. We used to use a toilet plunger in shallow water to plunge for clams when I was little. That way you don’t break the shells. How do you get your razor clams out of the sand? Have a great day.         • Oh my gosh, that sounds divine. Lovely ingredients, some of my faves. We use salt to ‘lure’ them out after finding their air holes by scraping our heels across the sand. I wrote about it a year ago here https://thearanartisan.com/2015/02/23/happy-as-a-clam-at-high-tide/ and the result is no broken shell; they deliver themselves out of the sand to us!

          I love your idea for using a plunger and won’t be able to resist trying as it sounds too fun not to!! I am a firm believer in there being more than one way to accomplish most things.

            That works well for the small soft shell clams. You should definitely try it, it is a lot of fun. You just press the plunger up and down on the bottom in shallow water over the clam holes and then wait for the sand to clear and you should have a hole with clams in it.     • They are not named yet…one more born this morning, that should be all of them that were due. The children will take turns naming them. I believe one of the above is named Corgy by my youngest son, after a dog in one of the Minions movies!

    • Ugh, I really liked this pair too. Any ideas on a brand that is worth investing in? I have a pair of Crocs which are fab, different material altogether so don’t crack, but terrible traction on them. Unfortunately I stepped on something and made a hole in the bottom of one. Amazed how Johnny and I have not been able to find any lasting wellies.

      Thanks for the advice, won’t waste my time trying repair kit… in return I will tell you that super glue is also useless. 🙂

        I’m still using the three pairs I picked up at car boot sales back in the UK, although one pair is an odd pair now 🙂 They have some great half wellies over here in Poland though, about £3 a pair, which I keep for the short runs!

    Enjoy being in the desert very much but oh do I miss fresh seafood! Savor those clams!

  3. Such a nice bit of R&R! The girls are adorable, and such good helpers. Won’t it be lovely seeing their handiwork on the stove tiles throughout the years? A wonderful reminder. Those baby goats – I would love to have goats!

    • It does mean much to them and me to help with little projects around the house and I agree, it will be a nice memory. Goats are pretty easy to keep and are great for keeping the lawn trimmed. The babies are the cutest ever!

      • Hi Melissa. I’m not home yet and I’m taking care of my mother, as go through serious illness. I don’t know, when I will be back yet. So nothing new from me yet.
        I wish that you will recover fast and feel good again. I have also had high fever in this last week and many are sick with virus now.
